Structural Awards 2017

Addressing the audience, current President Ian Firth said

“Now in its 50th year, the awards once again celebrate the world’s most outstanding structural engineering achievements.

Showcasing exemplary engineering, creativity and innovation, the 14 ground-breaking winners were chosen from a shortlist of 45 projects, in turn selected from 119 entries.

The reach of the institution all over the world and the absolutely crucial role that structural engineers play in designing safe and elegant structures everywhere

Entries were received from 22 countries and after careful evaluation the judging panel shortlisted 45 impressive projects from Europe, North America, Australasia, South America and Asia

Every year the judges are impressed by the consistently high standard of the entries – this year is no exception

I know such is the strength of the entries that reviewing the entries challenged and tested the judging panel. An excellent short list that we are about to see and we are all eager to discover which projects were chosen as winners.

The judging panel were delighted to see such a positive response, especially as this year when we unveiling our new awards categories. These new categories places a stronger emphasis than before on the structural characteristics of a project rather than the type of building and therefore it represented a reflection of the engineers skills and technical accomplishments involved.

We have before us tonight an excellent international and exciting shortlist, reflecting the full spectrum of our professions work

Thank you to the judges for their diligence and care in evaluating every entry and selecting the winners

In this 50th year of the awards we have a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the remarkable achievements of our profession over the last half century and consider the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for us in the next

My year as president has shown me the remarkable drive and ability of our membership and has filled me with huge confidence for the coming year.”

For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow …

John Staves, Managing Director at Michael Aubrey Partnership has been awarded fellowship of the Institution of Structural Engineers (FIStructE) as a reflection of his outstanding individual achievements, success and expertise within the engineering profession.

The fellowship was awarded to John by Alan Crossman FIStructE, President of the Institution of Structural Engineers at a prestigious ceremony at the Institution’s headquarters in London.

Key note speaker for the event was Simon Pitchers, Chartered Engineer and commonly known as “Crack Man” for his appearances on The Jeremy Vine show and with Sarah Beeny on C4’s “Help my house is falling down”.

Simon expressed what a privilege it was to be attending the presentations.

Simon Pitchers

What is a Structural Engineer?

Simon talked about how he is often asked “what is a structural engineer?” and one way of thinking about what a structural engineer does is to imagine the human body.

“If the human body was a building, structural engineers would be responsible for the skeleton”.

Structural engineers take dreams and make them a reality.  We are guardians of public safety and rarely get the recognition we deserve.

The Journey to Fellowship

The journey to fellowship starts early in education – you can’t fail at anything. You need a degree and relevant experience to be allowed to even to apply for an interview.

Only if you pass the interview are you permitted to sit the professional exam.

For every 10 people who sit the professional exam only 2 or 3 pass.

It’s a rigorous process and only the committed engineers will pass and become Chartered.

John’s Route to Fellowship

After leaving Durham University in 1988, John worked at Arups in Newcastle on their graduate program. One of his first projects was working on the Ponds Forge Swimming complex in Sheffield for the World Student Games.

Following a move to a small engineering practice in Bristol and then to Mercury Communications in Bracknell, having achieved Chartered Status, John was keen to set up his own practice and founded Michael Aubrey Partnership in 1994.

John contributes to the wider structural engineering profession through his work as a Trustee of the Institution of Structural Engineers, as well as encouraging others to join the profession through school careers events and professional reviews of prospective members.

Talking about achieving the Fellow grade of membership, John said “I feel very honoured to have received this recognition from my peers and colleagues for the contribution I have made to the profession of structural engineering, both through strategic input to the Institution’s direction and my technical work at Michael Aubrey Partnership.”

RICS BIM4SME Awards

The RICS BIM4SME Awards finalists have been announced and we are thrilled to have been shortlisted in the “BIM Innovation” category.

The RICS BIM4SME Awards 2015 recognises and promotes SME’s role and achievements in the UK’s adoption of BIM. The Awards aim to spread awareness, promote best practice and highlight the tremendous opportunities BIM presents to small and medium businesses.

In the category of “BIM Innovation” we entered our case study, The Headmaster’s House, Oratory school. In this project we were able to help our Client and his existing supply chain, deliver a BIM level 2 project on time, on budget with zero defects.

Neither our Client, nor his supply chain used BIM.

This was made possible by the innovative way in which we “modelled” the existing supply chains’ 2D drawings and brought them together in one federated model.

The innovative process we developed will compete against other finalists at an Awards ceremony on 18 June at Westminster Boating Base, London.

Are you attending the event? Please come and find us.
